HVAC Energy Efficiency

The words energy efficient are thrown around quite often and most know it is meant to save us a few extra dollars. What does energy efficient really mean when dealing with your HVAC system and is spending a little extra, to save a little extra, worth it? Whether heating or cooling, the efficiency can be measured and quantified dependent upon the type of system you have.

When it comes to your AC energy efficiency, it simply means that the amount of electrical energy used is minimaHVAC Energy Efficiencyl to the cooling output. When we hear the term SEER rating, this is what is being measured. It’s easiest to focus on what you might want to look for instead of the mathematics behind it.

The higher the SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) rating, the more efficient the air conditioner.  For residential homes, there are minimum requirements for energy efficiency mandated by the US Department of Energy (DOE). Currently the standardized SEER rating must be a minimum of 14 on all new equipment. Is your system meeting these requirements?

On the flip side, most homes in the metro Atlanta area are heated with gas forced air furnaces which heat air and distribute it throughout the home. A central furnace’s efficiency is measured by annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) Specifically, AFUE is the ratio of annual heat output of the furnace compared to the total annual fossil fuel energy. The current minimum rating mandated by the DOE is 78% energy efficiency.

If your home is heated by a heat pump, these too have an efficiency rating. Heating efficiency for air-source electric heat pumps is indicated by the heating season performance factor (HSPF), which is the total space heating required during the heating season. The most efficient heat pumps have an HSPF of between 8 and 10.

Many homeowners have older systems that are still properly cooling or heating their home. These systems, while functioning, may not offer much efficiency in comparison to current standards.  This means higher monthly utility bills.  With today’s highly advanced systems, homeowners can choose from:

  •  Furnaces that are 95% efficient and environmentally safe
  • Units that have low, medium and high speeds for superior comfort and saving – and that filter 99.98%of the air that we breathe
  • Air conditioners that adjust based on mild and hot day temperatures
