When considering replacing your heat pump, paying close attention to the Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) can save you on energy costs. The HSPF ratings tell you how efficient the heat pump is. By taking the amount of heating required divided by the total electric usage, a measure is given for each system.
The higher the HSPF rating, the better the heat pump’s efficiency. Even though heat pumps with a rating of 7.7 HSPF (and a Seer rating of 12+) or higher are awarded the Energy Star label, it is generally recommended for your heat pump to have a HSPF rating between 8 and 10. HSPF values are provided only for the heating portion of a heat pump. Whereas the SEER rating is the efficiency of the cooling portion.
